As a college student, you are going to be bombarded with all types of essays. Remembering what they are exactly about can be a challenge and headache. Do yourself a favor by memorizing some different names for the essays that can be used as helpful hints and reminders. There some examples for you.
1. The Force
Persuasive essays: “Come to the dark side…we have cookies”
The first type of essay that you may encounter as a student is a persuasive essay. Students recognize this paper as a “tell me why” or a “convince me” paper. This is because the purpose of this essay is to change the reader’s perspective towards your case presented in the writing. You can also label this paper as The Force and remember Star Wars. The force is used by Jedis and Sith to not only accomplish missions, but to also use the power to persuade people to join the light or dark side.
2. Game of Thrones
Expository essays: “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die”
Student writers tend to label expository essays as “what is it” or “explain it” writing. The key to this essay is to explain an idea, issue, or a theme to the readers. To help you remember this paper, you can call it the Game of Thrones essay. In the Game of Thrones series, there are always a lot of explanations going around. For example, the qualities of a ruler influence what they do or do not receive at the throne.
3. The Strain
Definition essays: “Love, you see, is the one force that cannot be explained, that cannot be broken down to a chemical process”
When students think about definition essays, a name for it that comes to mind is “love is…” or “it is” because the entire purpose of the paper is to give definitions and explanations of something in order to help readers understand a central notion. If you need help remembering this type of essay, reference it as the popular TV series The Strain. It is easy to correlate the series and what is expected in the essay because a good portion of The Strain deals a lot with defining things, like vampires and the virus. However, if you want to stay focused on the “love is…” theme, think of one of the series’ main characters, Abraham Setrakian, who has a few definitions of love.
Different types of essays can be hard to remember. However, using names that students have made up for papers can help a lot. Identifying essays is a snap!
