Once again, you have postponed writing your history essay until the last minute. Now you are under pressure to create a masterpiece…and quickly.

But the moment you sit down to start writing, you are plagued with exactly the same problems that made you put this off in the first place.

You don’t know where to find good sources. You also don’t really have any good ideas of the most effective ways to structure and organize your writing. It’s possible that you haven’t even been able to settle on a good idea of a topic yet.

In short, you have no idea what you’re doing.

It’s possible to purchase examples that you can use to guide you with your writing. And no, it isn’t cheating. There are many ways in which you can use a good essay without passing it off as your own. An essay example is just that – an example.

Having said that, it’s essential to ensure that any history essay examples you use are of excellent quality. If they are, then you can use them to help you create your own masterpiece. Here’s how.

  1. Ideas of a topic. You may not decide to use the identical topic of your sample essay, but as you read the paper, you will be surprised when other great ideas come into your head. A good essay sparks questions in the reader and gives him or her ideas of related topics to explore.
  2. Useful vocabulary terms. Perhaps, there are some subject-area words or phrases that you have always felt unsure of. Taking note of how these vocabulary terms are used in your sample paper will help you understand them better, so you can use them confidently in your own piece.
  3. Sources. Research can be overwhelming, and the hardest part is to know where to start. Use the references in your sample paper to point you in the right direction. These can be a springboard to other reliable sources of information.
  4. More interesting info. History papers can sometimes be very dry…even boring. Your sample essay will have interesting facts, stories, and ideas that you can borrow to make your writing more engaging.
  5. Accurate dates. One website says that Marie Antoinette was born on November 2. Another says November 15. Which one is right? You want to make sure you get your facts right, but your sources conflict. In a good sample essay, the facts have already been thoroughly researched using reliable sources, so you can trust them.
  6. Correct spelling of names. And while we’re at it, what is the correct spelling of “Antoinette?” Or even worse…”Robespierre?” Spelling, especially from a language with which you are not 100% familiar, can be a challenge. Use the spellings in your sample paper to make sure you get it right.
  7. Correct structure and format. Proper organization is the foundation of a good essay, but often it’s exactly the part that students struggle with the most. A quality example can serve as a model of the needed structure for your own essay.

If you need a little guidance, or just need to know how to kick off your writing process, an example history essay could be just what you need.
